Into great silence [Die große Stille] (Philip Gröning, 2005)

A special Lenten treat: Into Great Silence is an award-winning French documentary by Philip Gröning released in 2005. This 162 minute documentary offers a rare intimate look at the contemplative life of the monks of Grande Chartreuse - which opens its doors to the public for the first time since being founded by St. Bruno in 1084. View this exploration of silence and spirituality in full at this link, for free - it has no subtitles, nor does it need it. The film captures the monks' daily life without the intrusion of voice-over, musical score, interviews, or archival footage.
